Fashion 8
Course Outline
Course Objective: To teach some brand design elements and up-cycling.
Project Descriptions:
Project 1: Everyday our landfills
are filling up with stuff that could have been reduced, reused or recycled.
This includes textiles that could have been donated, put to better use or
“upcycled”. How can textiles that were about to be discarded be made into new
creations that are practical and appealing? Create an item using at least 50%
recovered textiles. These textiles can include scrap pieces, clothing, linens
and non-traditional materials as well.
Project 2: Brands and logos are all
around us in our culture including in our fashions. A successful brand is
easily recognizable because it has a strong visual identity. Students
themselves often like a brand because they like the image associated with it.
In this project students will ask themselves what creates a recognizable and
successful brand?
Evaluation
The students will be marked
from 4-1 (4 excellent, 3 good, 2 basic, 1 not meeting) in the four outcome
areas:
Explores interests, passions, and skills while
making connections to multiple occupational areas.
Plans, creates, appraises, and communicates in
response to challenges.
Works independently and with others while
exploring careers and technology.
Materials
Though the school has some
supplies for the students to use, it would be suggested for the students to
have the following supplies on hand.
This allows them to work at the machines and on their projects a little
more efficiently.
- Pins
- Pin cushion
- Small pair of scissors for snipping
- Seam ripper
- Case for above equipment
Even though we have scrap
fabrics for the students to use they may still ask to purchase materials for
their projects. The parents will need to
sign off on the proposal before the student hands it in for evaluation. After I have signed off on it as well, the
students will need to purchase their materials and supplies for the project.
- Good quality thread (Coats, Mettler, Gutterman)
and all other notions for project
- Fabric for projects
