Course Outline

Course Objective: To teach some basic quilting, textile art and decorative techniques.

Project Descriptions:
Project 1: Across cultures and time periods, textile items have been used for more than just covering up or creating practical items. By manipulating colors, shapes, textures; using various techniques for piecing together parts; dyeing and painting on fabric; and beading, applique and embroidery people have created items that are both practical and convey a message.  Now it’s your turn! Using a variety of methods design and create an item that utilizes various fabric art techniques to convey a message, theme or part of a story.

Project 2: Sewing often goes beyond just creating an item to wear or use. Over the course of time and across different cultures people have infused artistic ideas into their sewing. Fabric colors, textures and shapes can be used to create images and designs that adorn items such as tops, bags, pillows or blankets. Techniques such as dying, batik, appliqué, embroidery, beading and patchwork can be used to add an artistic touch. Using a variety of techniques, how can an image or design become a part of a practical item?

Materials
Though the school has some supplies for the students to use, it would be suggested for the students to have the following supplies on hand.  This allows them to work at the machines and on their projects a little more efficiently.
  • Pins
  • Pin cushion
  • Small pair of scissors for snipping
  • Seam ripper
  • Case for above equipment
Even though we have scrap fabrics for the students to use they may still ask to purchase materials for their projects.  The parents will need to sign off on the proposal before the student hands it in for evaluation.  After I have signed off on it as well, the students will need to purchase their materials and supplies for the project.
  • Good quality thread (Coats, Mettler, Gutterman) and all other notions for project
  • Fabric for projects
