Fashion 9

Fashion 9
Course Outline

Course Objective: Students will analyze and understand the factors that influence what people wear. They will learn the terminology used to describe fashion. One or more of the key pieces will be created using a commercial pattern as a base and adding a customized touch.

Project Descriptions:
Project 1: Current fashions - whether they are clothing, accessories or home décor - are influenced by a number of factors including trends from the past and cultural influences. Students will explore a period of fashion history or traditional cultural fashions in depth. They will create an item that is influenced by that time period or culture. Through their research, design and creating an item will answer the question: how are current designs influenced by past trends and by traditional cultural designs?
Project 2: Across cultures and time clothing has been more than just a way to cover our bodies. Each individual, group or culture has a variety of reasons why they wear the clothes that they wear. People make many considerations when buying clothing and building wardrobes. Envision a client who is in need of your assistance in creating a wardrobe for their professional and personal lives. Design a versatile wardrobe to suit their needs and style. Using a commercial pattern as a base, create at least one of the key items from this wardrobe. Also design and create an accessory for the wardrobe as well.

Evaluation
The students will be marked from 4-1 (4 excellent, 3 good, 2 basic, 1 not meeting) in the four outcome areas:
  Explores interests, passions, and skills while making connections to multiple occupational areas.
  Plans, creates, appraises, and communicates in response to challenges.
  Works independently and with others while exploring careers and technology.

Materials
Though the school has some supplies for the students to use, it would be suggested for the students to have the following supplies on hand.  This allows them to work at the machines and on their projects a little more efficiently.
  • Pins
  • Pin cushion
  • Small pair of scissors for snipping
  • Seam ripper
  • Case for above equipment
Even though we have scrap fabrics for the students to use they may still ask to purchase materials for their projects.  The parents will need to sign off on the proposal before the student hands it in for evaluation.  After I have signed off on it as well, the students will need to purchase their materials and supplies for the project.
  • Good quality thread (Coats, Mettler, Gutterman) and all other notions for project
  • Fabric for projects
